At Snapwire, we love the creativity we see from our users. Our goal is to bring beautiful, authentic photography to the stock game, and we’re consistently impressed with your submissions. With stock photography, it’s important to remember the basic rules that keep your photos legal and marketable. Sometimes we see photographers make simple mistakes that make it harder for them to earn points or have their photos added to our Collection. Read on for the basics, and use this sheet as a reference if you’re ever unsure in the future!

The basics of what to upload:

  • Clean, simple images
  • Adequately lit - no flash and nicely composed
  • No watermarks or branding
  • Limited use of filters
  • No borders
  • Minimum of 800 pixels, either from a phone or DSLR camera

How to ensure that you’re headed in the right direction:

No Borders: Borders limit how a buyer can use a photo. If a buyer wants to add a border after purchasing the photo they can, but if a photo already has a border, the buyer has fewer options.

Model Releases: If there are any recognizable people in your photos, they need to have given permission in the form of a model release to be featured.

Property Releases: If you’re taking a photo in a recognizable place, the property owner needs to sign a property release. There are also recognizable landmarks (like the Painted Ladies in San Francisco or the Flatiron Building in New York) that are illegal to photograph, so it’s important that you’re aware.

No Branding and Logos: Do not show any recognizable branding or logos in your photos. If you do, we cannot accept the photo.

No Watermarks: Buyers can’t use photos with a personal watermark because they’re usually trying to promote their own brand with the photos they purchase. If we see that your photos have a personal watermark, we are less likely to level you up.

Performances and Sporting Events: It’s illegal to sell photos from performances and sporting events unless you have a pass to take photographs at the event. For this reason, we do not accept photos from performances or sporting events.

Colors and filters: If a photo is heavily filtered, it impedes the buyer’s ability to edit it for their own needs. Light filters are fine, but too much editing takes away from a photo’s versatility. A good use of natural lighting is key.

Quality vs. Quantity: By choosing your most quality images over sheer quantity of angles, you’re offering a buyer your best work, and you’re saving them time.

A great rule of thumb when submitting photos on Snapwire is to think about maximizing the photo’s usability for the buyer. We never want you to wipe out your own creativity, but by keeping in mind how the photo will be used, you’re more likely to find success.

iPhone vs. DSLR:

DSLR cameras are great for situations with minimal lighting, more detail, depth, and times you need to zoom or snap quickly. Phones, on the other hand, are far easier to carry, are easy to pull out at a moment’s notice, and offer simple editing and authentic photos. Both are acceptable on Snapwire. We think that great photos can be taken on any variety of cameras, and it’s the photographer and the photograph that make the shot, not the gear.
